Sparkling irrelevant gems

"... in 1813-14 Thomas Stamford Raffles, as lieutenant governor of Java during its British occupation, tried without success to bring the Nagasaki trade of the Dutch under British control..."

W.G. Beasley. 1972. The Meiji Restoration. Stanford University Press. Stanford, California.
I love it how I find little gems like this in the midst of my research. It doesn't contribute to my research at all but it's such an interesting trivial that my history teachers never taught me.

p.s. As a kid, I use to think Raffles was quite handsome. Don't you think so?
